Choose How Wave Names Your Recordings
Wave automatically writes a title for every recording. With Title Format settings, you decide what those titles look like — lead with the date, the people in the conversation, your calendar event name, or build your own format.
Title Format is available on all platforms — mobile, web, and desktop — and it’s one setting: change it anywhere and it applies to new recordings on all your devices.
Where to Find It
iPhone & Android — Settings → Personalization → Title Format
Web (app.wave.co) — your Profile → Preferences tab → Title Format
Desktop — Settings → General tab → Title Format
Pick a Format
Choose one of five formats. A live preview at the top of the screen shows exactly how a meeting, a phone call, and a voice memo would be titled as you make changes.
Smart Title (default) — Wave writes a short descriptive title. Example: Q3 Pricing Strategy
Date First — lead with the day so your list reads like a journal. Example: Jul 24 · Q3 Pricing Strategy
People First — lead with who was in the conversation. Example: Josh & Sarah — Q3 Pricing Strategy
Calendar Name — use the calendar event name when there is one (like Weekly Growth Sync), otherwise a smart title.
Build Your Own — pick exactly what to include: Date, Time, Who was there, and Recording type. Wave always finishes the title with a short topic.
Don’t forget to tap Save Title Format when you’re done.
“Anything Else?” — Describe Your Style in Your Own Words
Below the formats there’s an optional field where you can tell Wave how you like your titles, in plain language. It works with every format. A few ideas:
“Keep it under 4 words.”
“Start with an emoji.”
“Always write titles in Spanish.”
Good to Know
New recordings only — changing your format never renames the sessions you already have.
Your own titles always win — if you type a title while recording or rename a session afterwards, Wave never overwrites it.
Missing details are skipped automatically — a voice memo with no attendees or calendar event just gets a clean topic title, with no awkward gaps.
Dates and times in titles currently appear in English format (like Jul 24); the topic itself follows the language of your recording.
Available to everyone — Title Format is included on every plan, free and paid.
