Text Wave: Ask About Your Recordings from iMessage or SMS
Text Wave's number from your phone and ask what was decided, who said what, or what you have to do next. Wave answers in Messages with links to the recordings it used.
Text Wave is Ask Wave in your Messages app. Text a question to Wave's number, such as "what did we decide in yesterday's call?", and Wave answers in a few short bubbles, followed by a Sources bubble with links to the recordings it used. It works over iMessage on iPhone, iPad and Mac, and over SMS on Android or any other phone.
It's the same assistant as Ask Wave in the apps, so it answers only from your own recordings, and the conversation shows up in your Ask Wave history too.
Text Wave is rolling out gradually. If you don't see Text Wave under Settings โ Integrations, it isn't on your account yet.
Connect your phone
Wave never texts first. You connect by sending one text from the phone you want to use.
In Wave, go to Settings โ Integrations โ Text Wave and tap Connect your phone. On your phone, Messages opens with the text already filled in. On the web or in the desktop app, you see a QR code to scan with your phone, plus the text to send.
Send the text. It reads Connect WAVE-XXXXXX and goes to Wave's number, +1 (628) 276-3452. The code works once and expires after 10 minutes; if it has expired, tap Connect your phone again for a fresh one.
Wave replies You're connected and offers its contact card. Save it: on iPhone, that also stops Messages showing the Report Junk prompt under Wave's replies.
You can connect more than one phone to the same account; repeat the steps from each one. Wave's number is a US number, so your carrier's standard messaging rates apply.
Ask a question
Text Wave anything you'd ask in the app, for example:
- "What did we decide in yesterday's call?"
- "Find where Sam mentioned pricing."
- "What are my action items from the Acme meeting?"
On iMessage, Wave reacts to your message with ๐ and shows a typing indicator while it works. The answer arrives as a few plain-text bubbles, then a Sources bubble linking to the recordings it used. Those links open the recording in the Wave app on your phone, or on app.wave.co anywhere else.
A conversation keeps its context until you've been quiet for 4 hours; after that, your next text starts a fresh one. In between, follow-up questions work the way they do in the app ("and who's doing that?").
Commands
Send any of these on their own:
| Text | What it does |
|---|---|
new | Starts a fresh conversation without waiting for the 4-hour gap. |
help | Reminds you what Wave can do and lists these commands. |
stop | Disconnects this phone from your Wave account. |
Disconnect
Text stop from the phone, or in Wave go to Settings โ Integrations โ Text Wave and select Disconnect next to the number. Wave stops answering that phone. You can connect again any time with Connect your phone.
Troubleshooting
- No reply. Check that you're texting from the phone you connected, in a one-to-one thread with Wave (Wave doesn't answer in group threads). If you were connecting, the code may have expired: tap Connect your phone again and send the new text.
- "To connect this number to your Wave accountโฆ" This phone isn't linked to a Wave account yet. Follow the steps under Connect your phone.
- iMessage says Not Delivered. Send it again. If it still fails, send it as an SMS instead: on iPhone, touch and hold the message and choose Send as Text Message.
- The answers come from the wrong account. The phone is connected to a different Wave account. Text
stop, then connect again from Wave while signed in to the right account. Connecting a phone that's already linked to another account moves it to the account you're signed in to.
Privacy and limits
- Wave reads only the texts you send to its number, and uses them to answer from your own recordings. Messages are delivered through a messaging provider. Wave stores which phone numbers are connected to your account, and the conversation lives in your Ask Wave history like any other chat. Wave's privacy policy is at wave.co/privacy.
- Text only, for now. Wave can't read photos, voice notes or attachments you send, and its answers are plain text.
- Wave can't start, stop or control a recording over text.
- Questions about using Wave are answered from the help center, but the thread can't be handed to the Wave support team yet. To reach support, use the Wave app.
